To explain it, Paolo Casoni, vice president of the Italian Phlebological Association, former professor at the University of Parma and today medical director, in the Emilian city, of the Hippocrates Vein Clinic Center.
Finally there is a new, non-invasive clinical methodology capable of eliminating varicose veins, a widespread problem that afflicts three million Italians.
A pathology that has assumed the alarm threshold at the health level with social implications of no small importance: “You suffer from it – explains Paolo Casoni, vice president of the Italian Phlebological Association, former professor at the University of Parma and today medical director, in the Emilian city , of the Hippocrates Vein Clinic Center – is absolutely disabling, limits everyday life and creates problems in relationships and affection. For this reason, intervening is often the most suitable solution”.
So intervene. But only until a few years ago, the only remedy was the so-called saphenectomy, a surgical treatment in which the dilated vein is “ripped” with anesthesia, bringing with it non-negligible post-operative consequences: “Technology in this field – says Casoni – has made great strides forward, I am thinking of the use of laser and radiofrequency, up to the innovative and totally non-invasive results of Sonovein ecotherapy, which, unique in Italy, we adopt right here in Parma. It is an innovative technique that creates enormous benefits. We are currently the only ones to practice it in Italy and in Europe there are six Centers doing the same”.
Sonovein uses ultrasounds, like those of ultrasound, but, contrary to what happens at a diagnostic level, it uses high-energy waves and focuses them on the vein to be treated. “In this way – Casoni claims- the heat source is made to converge in a precise point of the vein and the so-called thermal ablation is created, i.e. a closure of that section of the vein affected by the dilatation.
All the rest of the venous heritage, which is extremely precious for our body, is preserved and conserved. The patient has no scars because everything takes place without internal access to the vein and can easily resume his daily activities as soon as he leaves the surgery”.
However, sometimes, in the most complex cases, Sonovein is not enough. It is necessary to intervene simultaneously with a new sclerosing foam aligned to the most modern European standards. “It is – Casoni confirms – a foam made with a device called VariXio in a standardized way and therefore always the same and more effective than traditional foams”. “Our goal – concludes Casoni– is to spread this technology as much as possible.
Obviously it cannot be used by everyone, we need trained and competent doctors and we want to share our knowledge and train. As far as technology is concerned, it is still a large and expensive machine, so we are collaborating with the French company that created it, Theraclion, so that, thanks to research, it can become smarter and more accessible. Our hope is that it can be used in the majority of Italian hospitals”.
